Last month I received a wonderful communication from within the Office for Victims of Crime, U.S. Department of Justice sharing some wonderful and FREE resources that I wanted to pass along for anyone who can use them.

Mass Violence Toolkit www.ovc.gov/pubs/mvt-toolkit

The OVC Helping Victims of Mass Violence and Terrorism: Planning, Response, Recovery, and Resources Toolkit provides resources to help your organization develop a comprehensive victim assistance plan to prepare for and respond to victims of mass violence and terrorism in the most timely, effective, and compassionate manner possible. This victim-centered toolkit provides the field with a framework, strategies, and resources to:

  • Prepare and establish partnerships before an incident.
  • Respond to victims needs in the immediate aftermath of an incident.
  • Provide recovery strategies for longer-term healing.

Customize the toolkit’s partnership and planning, response, and recovery checklists to fit the needs of your community. Start with the checklists – they’re great to get you started.

Vicarious Trauma Toolkit www.ovc.gov/vtt

Exposure to the traumatic experiences of other people—known as vicarious trauma—is an inevitable occupational challenge for the fields of victim services, emergency medical services, fire services, law enforcement, and other allied professionals. Research shows that vicarious trauma, when left unaddressed, can lead to staff burnout, turnover, stress, and a lesser quality of services for victims.

This OVC toolkit contains a state-of-the-art repository with nearly 500 resources and offers guidance to help organizations strengthen their ability to address work-related exposure to trauma. Updated in 2018, users can now access the Blueprint for a Vicarious Trauma-Informed Organization for a step-by-step guide to assist their organization in becoming more vicarious trauma-informed.

OVC Training and Technical Assistance Center (OVC TTAC) www.ovcttac.gov

OVC TTAC also offers FREE Customized Technical Assistance to meet your organization’s needs. Contact OVC TTAC at TTAC@ovcttac.org or 1–866–682–8822 for information about Customized Technical Assistance and TTA related to the Mass Violence Toolkit and Vicarious Trauma Toolkit. We can help with your family assistance center plan, and more!

You can also register for their upcoming “Expert Q&A: What Really is the Best Mental Health Approach to Victims of Mass Violence?” here: https://www.ovcttac.gov/views/TrainingMaterials/dspWebinars.cfm. Click on “Past Webinars” for more Mass Violence help.

National Mass Violence Victimization Resource Center (NMVVRC) http://www.nmvvrc.org/

Located at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and with partners, the OVC National Mass Violence Victimization Resource Center is charged with developing a national victim-centric framework that addresses best practices for preparing for and responding to incidents of mass violence and domestic terrorism. Through research conducted and compiled at NMVVRC, government entities and organizations can adapt and use data on best practices for victims in their own strategies, preparations, and response plans to better support those affected by an incident. The NMVVRC, working closely with OVC, develops tools and strategies, engages communities across the Nation, and builds capacity for all to support victims, their families, and communities affected by mass violence.
